Artist: Charlie Norton HISTORIC & WESTERN Title: THE HIDE HUNTER II Bronze Artist: Charlie Norton
The "Hide Hunter" bronze depicts the buffalo hunters of the 1870's from Texas to Montana. The Sharps rifle was the favorite weapon with these rugged men. Cross sticks steady his aim. Spent cartridges lay on the buffalo hide coat where he sits, a canteen full of water to cool the barrel lay within easy grasp. On his hip is a Smith & Wesson 44 American pistol. By his side lays a knife sheath with the I. Wilson ripper and skinner as well as steel for sharpening knives. His belt buckle with an eagle insignia is of military issue during the Civil war. The clothing is typical of the 1870's vintage, as is the hat, shirt, vest and pants tucked in his high topped military boots. His goal for the day is to kill enough buffalo to keep his skinners busy and to ship hundreds of hides to the eastern market.
